FAQs

New to Swing Dancing in Lakeland? You’re in the right place.

Do I need any dance experience?

Nope. Most people who walk through our doors have never danced before. Our beginner lessons are designed to get you moving, laughing, and dancing within minutes.

Do I need a partner?

No partner needed. We rotate partners during class so you can meet new people and learn faster (but you can opt out anytime).

What if I’m nervous or feel like I’ll be bad?

Totally normal—and honestly, expected. Everyone starts exactly where you are. Our community is known for being welcoming, encouraging, and zero-pressure.

What happens on a typical night?

We start with a beginner-friendly swing dance lesson, then open the floor for social dancing where you can practice, connect, and have fun.

What is swing dancing?

Swing dancing is an energetic, joyful partner dance that grew out of jazz music. You’ll learn styles like Lindy Hop and Charleston—perfect for all skill levels.

Is this a good way to meet people in Lakeland?

Yes—this is one of the best social communities in the area. Many people come solo and quickly make friends.

What should I wear to swing dance?

Keep it simple: comfortable clothes you can move in. Think casual and breathable.

What shoes are best for dancing?

Shoes that let you turn easily are ideal. Avoid very grippy soles like running shoes.

How long does it take to get good at swing dancing?

You’ll feel comfortable within a few weeks. If you come consistently, you’ll improve quickly. While there is no definitive timeline, it is on you to progress at the level you hope to achieve. Talk to an event organizer for opportunities for growth!

Do you offer more than beginner classes?

Yes! We offer progressive classes, workshops, and special events as you grow. Please check out our event calendar for all upcoming events.

Can I ask anyone to dance?

Yes! It’s completely normal—and encouraged. Lindy Hop is a social dance, so please, be social!

What if someone says no?

No big deal. People sit out dances all the time. Just ask someone else. No is complete sentence. Please do not ask for explanation or try to change that person’s mind.

Do I have to rotate partners?

We encourage it because it helps you learn faster, but it’s always your choice. Please let the instructors know that you are not wanting to rotate, or step back and direct the dancer in rotation where to go next.

What should I do if something/someone makes me uncomfortable?

We understand that reporting an uncomfortable situation, conflict, or concern can be difficult. Anyone who shares a concern with LKLD Lindy Hop organizers will be treated respectfully, listened to seriously, and have their privacy protected to the extent possible.

To help maintain a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment, organizers may investigate concerns, speak with those involved, and take appropriate action based on the information available. To protect the privacy of attendees, we may not disclose the identities of reporting parties, witnesses, or confidential reports.

While we always strive to resolve concerns respectfully, organizers reserve the right to remove participants from an event or restrict future attendance when necessary to protect the safety, comfort, and well-being of our community.
